Baby Squirrels

DAY 34. The Party
Tuesday, 20 August 2002

Today the three baby squirrels met their neighbors! I held a pizza and fruit party, and many people stopped by to say hello and share their stories.

Luann and Tim are the owners of the Palm Tree that moved to San Diego. Tim is a biochemist. Luann is a veterinarian. She fed Paper an eyedropper of milk, then cuddled Scissors for the camera.

Rachel lives across the street from the Palm Tree, and she raised a squirrel baby the size of a nose! When it was full-grown, Rachel realized then that one cannot cage a wild squirrel, so she let it go free.

Today a hawk circled our backyard. The Squirrel Mother watches for birds of pray (raptors in California) and won't let her babies be seen from above. If a hawk spots the family, it may dive and carry a baby away! Mother Squirrel defends her nest, and will chase off a hawk.

Maria has a large backyard with many fruit and nut trees for animals. When it's time to release the squirrels into the wild, she will be happy to have Rock, Paper, and Scissors live in her backyard.

A young boy neighbor is in love with squirrels, and made his grandmother take him to the party to "see more pictures". He took a picture home, as did most of the other neighbors.
